About

Welcome to ‘a teacher in the making’, a blog created to help aid my journey to becoming a primary school teacher. For now, I will not be using my name in my posts. But let me tell you a little about myself.

I am a 28 year old female from England. I have never fully left education – I went from high-school to sixth-form, sixth-form to college, college to University and completed my Masters in Art Photography in October 2019. I have work experience in retail and hospitality but more importantly, have worked closely with children and young people involved in fostering as well as children with special needs. I was brought up as an only child whose parents are foster carers, so my entire life has been surrounded by children and young people from different backgrounds.

In October 2019 I was accepted into the Teach First programme – where I will learn to teach in the classroom from day one. One of the main aims of Teach First is to abolish inequality in teaching. (Some of the statistics regarding education inequality are unbelievable.)

My training in the classroom will not start until September 2020. Summer 2020 will be spent at summer institute, a five week intensive programme designed to prepare me for the classroom. The past 7 months have been spent preparing for my teacher training as well as working full time at a call centre (to pay the bills!) This has been a long time coming and I am very excited to be part of the Teach First 2020 Cohort!

If you have never heard of Teach First, I would definitely advise you to explore their website to see for yourself just how much work they are putting in to providing a fairer education system for all. I am extremely proud to be part of the growing Teach First community and am excited to be sharing this journey with you!
